SUNDAY OCTOBER 3rd I will compete in the Southwest Florida Blues Society Road To Memphis Blues Challenge. I go on at about 2:40pm. I will be in the solo/duo category. Thank you to Mel, Blues Bobby, and Heidi Ho Rosenbaum for all the help getting prepared for this. Heidi is still on the mend from a knee operation or she'd be banging it out alongside me. Maybe next time!
The northeast tour went great. Me and Vicky just got back to Florida on Tuesday. The whole trip along with the drive was about 17 days.
The Bootleg Hollow Blues Retreat in Andes NY was a real blast. Jonathan Luks and I taught the finer points of playing blues guitar to old pals Dennis Meschino and Bill Sand. Also on hand were new pals Donald Leitch and Mike Ogeltree. Thank you to Bruce Tyler for playing drums all weekend, and to Daphne Bell for being there with her dry wit and sharp perspective. And thank you to Rich Acciavatti for playing the gig at The Wayside on Sunday evening with ALL of US.
We played all day for 3 days. In between we ate good food, laughed, stretched, did yoga, and jumped into the pond or hot tub. We discussed the minor & major pentatonic scales, mixolydian mode, diatonic chords, and other aspects of music theory. We also discussed the importance of playing simply when soloing, how to blend with other musicians, and how to accompany a singer or another soloist. We did a gig on Sunday evening .
The gig at the Turning Point was amazing too. Mal Stein and Dave Hofstra played their usual hipster jazz and cool blues style. We hadn't seen each other in two years but we picked up where we left off. Me and Vicky saw several family members including my daughter Naomie and her boyfriend Danny. We hung out with my ex-wife BB too. And we saw several old friends like Hollie, Dennis, and Pamela. And we made some new friends too.
The one problem that reared its ugly head on the tour was that The Stanhope House screwed us royally. They cancelled the gig on us on 2 days notice and showed a paranoia and negativity that I never expected from their booking manager. He used to be a friend. On the other hand, thank you to Greg Lewis and John Muller for all the help they provided along the way, and to John McAvoy of The Turning Point who is one of the BEST club owners in history.
