Having won the South Florida Blues Challenge back in September, Ross 'n' Rose went to Memphis last week to compete in The IBC (International Blues Challenge). It was a thrilling experience. There were 99 bands and 89 solos/duos performing in about 10 or 12 clubs up and down Beale St. All the entrants to the competittion had already won the right to ccompte in Memphis because they had won a competition locally. They came from all over the world, Europe, Australia, Canada, and all over the USA, 188 acts in all.
Rose 'n' Rose competed in the solo/duo category. The quarter finals took place on Wednesday & Thursday and we were assigned to play on the upstairs stage at Jerry Lee Lewis' Club on Beale St.
Heidi and I were particularly good especially on Thursday. The audience was really good and having a good audience really helps bring out the best in performers especially singers.
Thank you Memphis, because of you, we were selected along with 35 other solo/duo acts to compete in the semi-finals. We were assigned to play on the downstairs stage at Jerry Lee Lewis' Club. The downstairs was overcrowded, smoky, and chaotic at times (what about that drunken dancing exhibition that took place right between the band stand and the judges bench? Wow). However, by the time we went on at 11:40pm, the last act of the night, the place had thinned out considerably.
Wwe played pretty damn close to our best but we were not selected to move on to the finals at The Orpheum. Only 8 of the original 89 solo/duo acts were selected for the finals.
There were also 8 bands that were selected including The Pitbull Of Blues Band who finished 3rd! Congratulations to Richie Correcelli, Deny Rowand and Josh Rowand.
Congratulations to Bluestone who made it to the finals, and the Deny Artache Band that made it to the semis. All of them great.
Congratulations to all the acts that competed, they were all top notch pros. You know what they say in sports, "on any given night" and "it's a game of inches". That applies to blues too. True dat.
Thank you to the Blues Foundation and the IBC for hosting such a marvelous event.
