11/27: IBC fundraiser in Stuart

Subject: 11/27: IBC fundraiser in Stuart
Date: November 25th 2024

I am gearing up for the International Blues Challenge that which runs from January 7 to 11, 2025 in Memphis TN. I wiil be competing in the solo/duo category and will be performing as a solo.
Participating in fundraisers is essential to help the musicians pay for the trip to Memphis to compete in the IBC. The expenses add up fast. There's a 5 night stay at a hotel, airline tickets, and eating out twice a day for a whole week including the travel days. You can easily spend $1500 or more. Plus, there is no pay involved at the IBC. On top of all that, while you are in Memphis hoping to finish in the money, you can't be gigging, so you are losing out on some work.
Oh sure, there are prizes if the judges select you as one of the top finalists among the 100 artists from all over the world who have also come to Memphis to compete, having already won a regional competition in their own city, town, state, province, or country. For the solo/duo acts the winner gets $2500 plus a gig at the Durango Blues Train in Colorado, some advertising in the Blues Festival Guide, and some Lee Oskar harmonicas. Second place finisher gets $1500, the advertisiing and the harmonicas. The other 98 players in the solo/duo can say they won a local competition to get to Memphis and may see a slight temporary bump in the gig schedule for a while until the next opportunity comes along.
Wednesday I will be at Conchy Joe's in Stuart as the featured artist with Hurricane Hawk & The Invaders. There will be a jam session there also so if you are a musician, bring your ax. I'm not sure if it is an open jam or by invitation only so contact Hurricane Hawk Levy to find out.
I am also working on my set lists, practicing the tunes, and tweaking the material & my performance.
I am also trying to get my equipment in shape. My Ibanez acoustic guitar has active pickups powered by a 9 Volt battery and sometimes I plug into an amp or a sound system and the guitar sound is distorted. I have to get to the bottom of this because I can not count on that guitar the way things are. I am actually looking for a really good acoustic with a passive pickup (no battery) or no pickups at all, just a centrally located round sound hole. A guitar like that can be mic'ed or I can use my old Bill Lawrence pickup that can clip into the round sound hole. That pickup works great, I've never had a problem with it and I've had it since the 1980s. The Ibanez does not have such a sound hole so the Bill Lawrence is out of the question for that guitar.
If you have a Martin or a Taylor or something comparable please let me know. I want to make life less stressful in Memphis.
