I won the South West Florida Blues Society Regional Blues Challenge last night in the solo/duo category at Cape Cabaret Dinner Theater in Cape Coral. That gives me the right to go to Memphis in January to compete in the International Blues Challenge (IBC).
This will make the second time in 3 years that I have competed in the IBC. in 2020 Ross 'n' Rose made it as far as the semi-finals. Heidi Ho Rosenbaum was my partner then. She was on drums & background vocals, and handled half of the song introductions too. I played as a solo last night because Heidi is still recuperating from knee surgery. There is also the question of whether or not she is even eligible to compete in the IBC because she competed the maximum number of times already (three).
Heidi & I earned the right to go to the IBC in 2020 after winning the South Florida Blues Society Challenge in the fall of 2019. The South Florida Blues Society is on FL's East Coast while the South West Florida Blues Society is on the Gulf Coast. So I have won on both coasts of Florida. Not too shabby.
Fortunately, Heidi was still willing to give me advice about what songs to play and how to pace the 20 minute set. Having competed 3 times in Memphis, Heidi Ho knows the drill.
Heidi and I did not compete last year due to the pandemic. Duh.
There was very strong competition tonight coming from the Bob Page Duo a wonderful piano & drums combo; CC & Moony and CC is a helluva singer; and from Champ a fine singer songwriter. Anyone of them could easily have won the sontest. There was also another duo called Two Blue 2, but I didn't hear them.
I am very excited and grateful to be going to Memphis again. And congratulations to the Randy Stephens Band who won in the band category against some very stiff competition as well including The Mary Brooks Washington Band with my buddies Mike Ancona on bass & Sonnyboy Williams on keys.
And an 11 year old guitarist/singer named Champ Jaxson performed an impressive set in the youth category.

I will be taking on a limited number of dedicated guitar, bass, and harmonica students regardless of age or current level of expertise.
Robert is a two time New York Music Award winner and a New York Blues Hall of Fame inductee. Robert is known for a wide variety of blues, jazz, soul, country, rock ‘n’ roll, folk, and other roots music. Robert worked and recorded with Big Joe Turner and also worked with Lightnin’ Hopkins, John Lee Hooker, Otis Rush, Big Mama Thornton, Brownie McGhee, Memphis Slim, and other legends. One of Robert’s songs was recorded by Johnny Winter, and two other songs appeared on the soap opera “All My Children”. The Robert Ross Band has released 7 internationally distributed CDs and toured two continents. Robert has been teaching guitar for more then 25 years privately, and 13 years in NYC public schools. Robert’s work in the schools has been cited by the NY State Council of the Arts (NYSCA) for “best practices in arts in education programming”.
Lessons are $40 per half hour, and $60 per hour.
